When designing or evaluating a tennis court, it’s essential to understand the specific dimensions each type of court requires. Here, we’ll cover the measurements for standard singles, doubles, and clay singles courts.

Standard Singles Tennis Court Dimensions

A standard singles tennis court is designed for matches between two players. The dimensions are as follows:

  • Overall length (baseline to baseline): 23.77 meters
  • Overall width: 8.23 meters
  • Serve box length (service line to net): 6.40 meters
  • Service width (singles sideline to centre mark): 4.12 meters
  • Service box width (doubles sideline to singles sideline): 1.37 meters
  • Net height at centre: 0.914 meters

It’s worth noting that the area outside the lines is typically extended to give players more room to run, with recommended additional space of at least 3.05 meters beyond the baselines and 3.66 meters beyond the sidelines for competitive play.

Standard Doubles Tennis Court Dimensions

A standard doubles tennis court is used when four players are involved in the game (two on each team). The dimensions for a standard doubles tennis court are slightly wider than the singles court to accommodate play with partners:

  • Overall length (baseline to baseline): 23.77 meters (same as singles)
  • Overall width: 10.97 meters
  • Serve box length (service line to net): 6.40 meters (same as singles)
  • Service width (doubles sideline to centre mark): 4.12 meters
  • Service box width (doubles sideline to singles sideline): 4.88 meters

The extended areas surrounding the court for doubles should ideally match those of the singles court to provide adequate space for doubles play.

Clay Singles Tennis Court Dimensions

Clay courts offer a different playing experience and are composed of crushed brick, shale, or stone. While the official playing dimensions remain the same as the standard singles court, these courts often require additional space around them to maintain the surface and accommodate sliding, a joint movement for players on clay. Here are the dimensions:

  • Overall length (baseline to baseline): 23.77 meters (same as standard singles)
  • Overall width: 8.23 meters (same as standard singles)
  • Serve box length (service line to net): 6.40 meters (same as standard singles)
  • Service width (singles sideline to centre mark): 4.12 meters (same as standard singles)
  • Service box width (doubles sideline to singles sideline): 1.37 meters (same as standard singles)

While the playing area is consistent with a hard or grass singles court, the total recommended area for a clay court includes the space for the clay to be distributed around and outside the lines.

It’s advisable to account for additional space around the court for player movement, seating, and aesthetics for all court types.
